⏱️ How Long Should a Father of the Bride Speech Be?

Three to five minutes. About 450 to 750 words.

Four is right for most people. You are usually first, which means you set the tone and the length expectation for everyone after you.

That is worth taking seriously. If you run to eight minutes, the best man will feel licensed to run to ten, and the room will be tired before the meal is cleared.

The father of the bride speech does more work than its length suggests. You are welcoming people, thanking the ones who travelled, and handing the evening over in a particular mood.

So the temptation is to cover everything. Resist it. Housekeeping belongs to whoever is running the room, not to you.

What only you can do is talk about your daughter with twenty years of evidence behind it. That is the part to spend your minutes on.

• A welcome, short, and thanks to anyone who genuinely needs naming
• One story about her, ideally from a time she does not remember
• What she is like now, said plainly
• A real welcome to her partner, by name, not a passing mention
• The toast

The most common miss is the fourth item. A father of the bride speech that spends four minutes on the daughter and eight words on her husband reads as reluctance, whether or not you meant it.

Read it aloud standing up. Most people speak at 130 to 150 words a minute, and slower when the subject matters.

This is the speech most likely to catch its speaker out emotionally, usually somewhere in the middle of the childhood story. Build in a pause you can take without it looking like a stumble, and practise reading the last two lines as a unit so you can finish on autopilot if you need to.

If the read-aloud runs four minutes, expect four and a half on the night. That is fine. Five is fine. Eight is not.
